HELLÉBUYCK SAID “I’M OUT!” — DEVILS ROB WINNIPEG FOR A THREE-TIME VEZINA WINNER!
Connor Hellebuyck told the Winnipeg Jets, "I'm out!" and gets his trade request granted to the New Jersey Devils! Well, well, well… Connor Hellebuyck is finally out of Winnipeg!
And apparently, the New Jersey Devils looked at the situation and said, "You know what? We'll take that problem off your hands."
The Devils have acquired the three-time Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender from the Winnipeg Jets, and this isn't just some little hockey trade where everybody shakes hands and goes home.
This is a BIG one.
New Jersey sent Winnipeg Dawson Mercer, Nick Bjugstad, Alexander Command, goalie Nico Daws, a 2027 seventh-round pick and a 2029 second-round pick.
That's four players and two draft picks for one goaltender. New Jersey practically emptied the garage and said, "Fine, just give us the goalie."
And let's be honest, Hellebuyck wasn't exactly hiding the fact that he wanted out. The man requested a trade this summer because he believed leaving Winnipeg was best for him and his family. Then he didn't report to training camp.
That's right. He basically said, "I ain't coming."
The Jets suspended him, and while he sat at home, he was reportedly losing almost $39,000 PER DAY.
ERROL MARKS QUESTION: WHO HAS $39,000 A DAY TO LOSE?!
I lose $39 at the gas station and start looking at my bank account like somebody committed a felony. This man was losing almost $40,000 EVERY DAY and apparently said, "Yeah… I'm still good."
Hellebuyck ended up forfeiting nearly $928,000 by sitting out the beginning of the season.
That's not a paycheck. That's a mortgage company's nightmare.
But apparently, the Jets finally decided enough was enough. Negotiations picked up Thursday night, New Jersey became the favorite, and BOOM, trade done.
And honestly, the timing makes sense.
Winnipeg is hosting the Heritage Classic on Sunday, and the Jets didn't want the entire weekend turning into a bunch of reporters asking, "WHERE IS HELLEBUYCK?"
Instead of talking about the outdoor game against Montreal, everybody would've been asking about the goalie who wanted to leave town. So Winnipeg basically said, "Can we please trade this man before Sunday so we can enjoy our own party?"
And now Hellebuyck is heading to New Jersey.
Here's where this gets REALLY interesting.
Hellebuyck isn't some average goalie. This dude has THREE Vezina Trophies. He won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 2025, helped Team USA win Olympic gold earlier this year, and he's in the third year of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract.
So the Devils didn't just go out and get somebody to stop a few pucks. They went and got a guy who has basically been telling the NHL, "Don't shoot this thing at me unless you're prepared to be embarrassed."
And the oddsmakers noticed.
New Jersey's Stanley Cup odds at DraftKings immediately jumped from 25-1 to 14-1.
Translation: Vegas looked at this trade and said, "Ohhhhh… the Devils are serious now."
And I don't blame them.
New Jersey has already been making some big moves under first-year GM Sunny Mehta. He traded Jacob Markstrom to Florida over the summer, and now he's bringing in Hellebuyck.
This GM isn't shopping for groceries. THIS MAN IS SHOPPING LIKE HE JUST WON THE LOTTERY.
But let's talk about the price, because Winnipeg didn't exactly give this guy away.
Dawson Mercer is heading to the Jets. Mercer is only 24 years old and has already played 420 games for New Jersey, putting up 213 points. He's a legitimate NHL player who still has plenty of hockey ahead of him.
Nick Bjugstad is also headed to Winnipeg, although he's currently recovering from surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle and was originally expected to miss four to six months.
Then there's 18-year-old Alexander Command, New Jersey's first-round pick, 12th overall, in the 2026 NHL Draft. Add in goalie Nico Daws and two future draft picks, and Winnipeg definitely got some pieces to work with.
But New Jersey got something it desperately wanted.
A GOALTENDER WHO CAN CHANGE THE ENTIRE PERSONALITY OF A TEAM.
The Devils have struggled to get consistent goaltending, and bringing in somebody with Hellebuyck's resume changes the conversation immediately. You're talking about a guy who can steal games, make unbelievable saves and give everybody in front of him a little more confidence.
Because when your goalie is standing on his head, everybody else can play a little differently.
And here's the funniest part.
The Devils and Jets are scheduled to play each other twice this season. New Jersey goes to Winnipeg on November 10, and then Winnipeg comes to New Jersey on November 28.
Ohhhhh boy.
You KNOW that November 10 game is going to be interesting.
Imagine Hellebuyck walking into Winnipeg wearing a Devils jersey. The fans are going to be looking at him like, "BRO… YOU REALLY LEFT US?!"
And Hellebuyck is probably going to be standing there like, "I told y'all I wanted out."
I'm already telling you, November 10 needs to be circled on the calendar. Assuming Hellebuyck is in net, this isn't just another hockey game.
This is the ex coming back to the neighborhood with a brand-new partner.
Some Winnipeg fans are going to be booing, New Jersey fans are going to be screaming, and Hellebuyck will be trying to stop every puck the Jets throw at him while pretending he doesn't hear thousands of people letting him know how they feel.
That's entertainment.
But let's not forget something else. Hellebuyck's departure wasn't necessarily just about hockey.
After he helped the United States defeat Canada for Olympic gold, the Jets requested additional security for him and contacted police over threats and safety concerns involving Hellebuyck and his family.
That's serious stuff.
Now, we don't know exactly how much that situation influenced his decision to leave, and I'm not going to pretend we do. But when somebody says moving on is best for himself and his family, there's clearly more to consider than just wins, losses and where he wants to play hockey.
Whatever the full story is, Hellebuyck wanted out.
And now he got his wish.
The Devils got their goalie. The Jets got their players and picks. And the NHL just got another storyline that's going to be fun as hell to watch.
Now comes the biggest question: Did New Jersey just turn itself into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender?
Because acquiring a three-time Vezina winner is one thing. Getting him back to playing like one is another.
Hellebuyck is 33 years old, hasn't played a game this season, and is coming off a year in Winnipeg when he posted a .895 save percentage. That's a long way from the .925 he put up during his MVP season in 2024-25.
So yes, New Jersey is getting one of the most accomplished goaltenders in hockey. But they're also betting that he can return to the form that made him one of the best.
And that's a pretty big bet.
But here's my final take.
New Jersey didn't trade for Connor Hellebuyck because they wanted to sell jerseys. They traded for him because they believe they can WIN.
And if Hellebuyck plays like the guy who won three Vezina Trophies and a Hart Trophy, the Devils just went from being a nice team to a team nobody wants to see in the playoffs.
Because let's be real.
You can score five goals a game, but if your goalie can't stop a beach ball, you're going home.
New Jersey just decided, "Enough of that nonsense. We're getting the guy who stops EVERYTHING."
And Winnipeg?
Well…
Good luck with that breakup.
Because Hellebuyck isn't coming back to apologize for leaving town. If he's between the pipes on November 10, he's coming back wearing a Devils jersey.
And THAT game?
OH, I'M WATCHING THAT ONE.
