Mets Still Hope for the Playoffs

The Mets and the Yankees are busy fighting for the postseason in what has turned out to be a glorious summer for baseball. The Yankees are wheeling and dealing, trying to collect all the pieces for a complete baseball team. The Mets are not. The Mets are selling baseball tickets and sitting on the team they have, still wondering if Pedro Martinez will be back in championship form in time.

All the trades are moving most the national attention over to Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees are loudly trying to make their case for magical season. The Mets are quietly letting the team that battled back from third place and a season in oblivion keep keepin’ on.

The reality is that getting the old Pedro back is like a blockbuster trade, but without trading away the future. If he returns in decent form to pitch with Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey, the Mets potential postseason rotation is not looking too bad. Throw in a John Maine or Oliver Perez pitching decently and the team has the mound covered.

The offense is already there. It may not be as feared as the Chicago Cubs batting lineup, but it has played very well in the last month or so. Jose Reyes is hitting well and being a nuisance to pitchers with his constant threats to steal. David Wright is having another excellent all around season. The Carloses, Beltran and Delgado, are giving the club plenty of hitting. They could bat .260 for the rest of the season, but the timely homeruns could lead directly to World Series tickets.

There is some clamoring for the Mets to try and get Manny Ramirez, who is tired of helping the Red Sox sell tickets, but the Mets proved that having all the talent in the world does not guarantee success. It was only after the team gelled midway through the season that they started winning.

Shea Stadium could use another outfielder Ryan Church and Moises Alou’s health in question, but not at the risk of disturbing the fragile balance that has the team in the fight for first place.
