Walk into the Met clubhouse this spring, and there’s a team on a mission.
Almost to a man, the team seems determined to erase any bad memories of last season by coming through in 2008. The collapse is not mentioned, nor is any hangover lingering.
The offseason helped with the acquisitions of Johan Santana with Ryan Church and Brian Schneider also coming over in a trade.
Maybe, new blood is what the Mets needed in order to turn the page and start 2008 off right.
Yet, major changes are not needed and many of the names will be the same, while the new additions will compliment an already powerful team.
That is, if they can stay healthy.
Let’s take a closer look:
First Base
Carlos Delgado [.258, 24 homers, 87 RBI]
Delgado may be the keystone to the lineup, because his lefthanded bat is needed to compliment David Wright and Carlos Beltran. If he can return to form, the Mets will be fine. But if he can’t, the Mets may have to find a bat to replace him.
Second Base
Luis Castillo [.296, 1 home run, 20 RBI in 50 games with Mets]
The Mets may have found a solution to their second base problem. Not only does he give the team a good glove, but also fits nicely into the No. 2 hole in the lineup. The only question with Castillo is his health. If his right knee can hold up, then the Mets have a perfect fit.
